A First-Person History of Technology and Career Evolution

Technology has a funny way of showing up uninvited, rearranging the furniture, and putting the office and industries into a panic. I’ve watched it happen five times:
- Personal computer
- Cellphone
- Internet and Web – Multimedia
- Social media
- Artificial intelligence
Every wave arrived with experts explaining why ordinary people would never use it. Then people used it in ways the experts never imagined.
I worked inside these changes—at IBM, Motorola, and later in real estate, nonprofit communication, news, publishing and broadcasting, government, medicine, education, consulting, and media.
I saw jobs created, old jobs rebuilt, and industries dragged into the future. Innovators asked, “What can we do with this?” Traditionalists asked, “Why would anybody want it?”
We know which question aged better.
The PC: Suddenly, Everybody Had the Controls
In March 1983, I joined IBM’s Personal Computer Division in Boca Raton, Florida. DOS 1.1 had just been released. Computing power mostly belonged to specialists guarding centralized systems. If you wanted something done, you submitted a request and waited. The technical department (IT) held the keys.
Then the personal computer landed on the desk.
Suddenly, writers could revise without waiting for typesetting. Accountants ran numbers. Investors speculated with what-ifs. Marketers explored data and created their own content. Small businesses used tools once reserved for giant corporations.
New jobs appeared in software, support, training, desktop publishing, and design. Existing jobs in finance, engineering, journalism, and marketing absorbed computer skills.
The machine did not simply eliminate work. It moved tasks, authority, and opportunity.

That was the revolution. The PC turned people from requesters into operators. Companies that understood it moved faster. People who learned the tools became more valuable.
The holdouts kept explaining why the old workflow was fine – right up until it wasn’t.
Multimedia: Before the Web, We Showed Them the Web
I knew the PC could become more than an electronic typewriter with a calculator attached. In 1986, I launched a prototype multimedia studio at IBM and became the company’s first multimedia producer. We combined text, photography, graphics, sound, animation, and video when those fields lived in separate worlds.
Multimedia scrambled job descriptions. Writers thought visually. Designers learned interaction. Producers worked with programmers. Educators built experiences instead of simply delivering lectures. It was messy and exciting – innovation before the consultants arrived and gave it a tidy name.
Our award-winning production, “Introducing Ultimedia,” demonstrated a connected future six years before most people experienced the Web. We showed how digital networks would transform news, publishing, education, gaming, business, travel, and content creation.
It appeared on Good Morning America, the Today show, Discovery Channel, CNN, PBS, and technology magazine covers. We won a NY Film Festival Award for it in 1989.

The message was simple: information was becoming interactive, searchable, visual, immediate, and connected. Industries would have to rebuild how they created products, reached audiences, collected revenue, and defined jobs.
In 1992, I presented the production to editors at The New York Times (Web went live in 1994). Their verdict? Nobody would ever read a newspaper on a computer.
Nobody.
Why stare at a screen when you could hold a printed newspaper? Reasonable – if screens, networks, and readers never improved.
But innovation does not freeze at version one. The Web brought continuous updates, global distribution, search, links, video, data, and participation. It did not put a newspaper on a screen. It changed deadlines, reporting, advertising, revenue, and the relationship between the newsroom and the public.
The experts knew newspapers. What they underestimated was people.
The Internet: Every Business Became a Media Business
When the Internet and Web went mainstream, websites became storefronts, newsrooms, classrooms, service counters, and public stages. Businesses hired developers and search specialists, but the change reached almost every worker.

Salespeople researched prospects. Customers compared competitors in seconds. Employees collaborated across distance. Publishers and broadcasters lost their monopoly on audiences.
With the technology I brought web communication, search marketing, blogging, and digital campaigns into homebuilding, real estate, and the government. At Pulte Homes, DiVosta, and Del Webb, digital tools changed how buyers found communities and moved through sales. I also used web, email, video, events, and digital publishing in nonprofit communication; eGovernmnet; and local, regional, national, and international news.
Disruption rarely arrives as one shiny job title. It rewires existing jobs. The salesperson becomes a researcher. The marketer becomes a publisher and broadcaster. The customer becomes a reviewer. The audience becomes measurable. Information accelerates, and the gatekeepers discover the gate has disappeared.
The Cellphone: The Office Escaped the Office
After IBM, I joined Motorola in Plantation, Florida, in 1995. That’s where the first cellphone was developed. I believed everyone would carry a personal computer in their pocket. That probably sounded ambitious.
Today, people panic when that computer-in-their-pocket drops below 20 percent battery.
I used multimedia and the early Web to help launch Nextel and explain a device combining two-way radio, cellular calling, paging, texting, and a wireless modem. BusinessWeek Magazine recognized it as a defining product of the 1990s.

Work was becoming mobile, immediate, and coordinated.
Dispatchers reached field teams instantly. Executives decided away from headquarters. Public-safety personnel, construction crews, and service organizations coordinated in real time.
Smartphones added cameras, maps, publishing, payments, and software. That convergence created app developers, mobile marketers, gig platforms, remote teams, and services nobody requested because nobody knew they were possible.

The office escaped the office. That created freedom and speed.
It also created a new question: if work can reach you anywhere, when exactly are you not at work? Technology solves problems. Humans then invent brand-new problems.
Social Media: Everybody Got a Broadcasting Platform
Social media finished what the PC and Web started. Publishing no longer required a printing press, broadcast license, or corporate budget. Employees, customers, activists, experts, entertainers, and complete unknowns could build audiences directly.
You could “look” bigger than you are.

Marketing became a nonstop public conversation. Reputation could rise or collapse before lunch. New roles appeared in community management, content strategy, influencer marketing, analytics, and digital customer care.
Journalists, executives, teachers, recruiters, and officials learned that “off the record” is dangerous when everybody carries a camera 24 hours a day.
I treated social media as part of a communication system – not a toy or scoreboard for meaningless likes. I combined it with websites, email, search, video, events, and reporting to grow audiences and increase sales.

Results came when technology served a purpose: informing people, building trust, increasing membership, or connecting buyers with opportunities.
The platforms changed. Human nature did not. Credibility, relevance, timing, and a good story still won.
AI: The Machine Can Draft. Humans Still Have to Think.
Now we have artificial intelligence, and the predictions are the same:
AI will solve every problem on Earth or eliminate every job by Thursday.
History suggests something more complicated. AI will automate tasks, compress production time, and challenge roles. It will also give individuals capabilities once reserved for specialized teams: research; brainstorming; analysis; business planning; translation; drafting; coding; image, video, and audio creation; personalization; and prototyping.

The biggest change will happen inside jobs. Professionals will spend less time producing first drafts and more time
- Framing problems
- Directing systems
- Checking facts
- Applying judgment
- Owning results
AI can answer in seconds. It cannot guarantee the answer is true, wise, ethical, useful, or appropriate.
When machines generate unlimited plausible content, human experience becomes more valuable -not less. So do taste, empathy, ethics, skepticism, and accountability.
Winners will not surrender their craft to AI. They will understand it well enough to challenge, edit, and improve what AI produces.

Developers invent the technology. Everyday people decide what it becomes. They discover the unexpected uses, build the unexpected businesses, and create the unexpected jobs.
The experts will keep predicting what people will never do. People will keep doing it anyway.
