Understanding your customers/clients goes beyond just knowing their names and basic demographics. It’s about comprehending their needs, desires, and pain points. 🤔
How well do you know what they truly want? Listen closely to their feedback, engage in meaningful conversations, and conduct interviews to unravel their preferences and expectations, follow them on social media and see what they post. Surveys rarely work. Interview!
Remember, it’s not always what you think they need; sometimes, it’s what they’re longing for that truly matters.
Case Study
A new home builder I started working for had a $20 million annual budget to market homes in Florida. The first thing I did when I joined them as their Director of Marketing, was start a Market Research project that included buyer interviews, media channel use, and psychographics [Qualitative methodology of studying consumers based on psychological characteristics and traits such as values, desires, goals, interests, and lifestyle choices]. Quickly I found out that actual buyers did not use or access $9.2 million worth of advertising channels that we were using.
So, I cancelled those media outlet contracts saving almost half of the annual budget and moved some of that funding to online marketing that they had not started yet. Results: When I joined the company they had about 70,000 prospects in their system. Sounds like a lot but they wanted to grow to selling 4,000 homes per year. After the market research and adjusting strategy, we had over 300,000 qualified prospects in our system within a year and achieved our sales goals.
It’s all about understanding customers and where they hang out.
